Organization of Boy Scouts of America

The Boy Scouts of America is organized on multiple levels from National to the Local Units, as described below:

National - The National Office, located in Irving (Dallas), Texas, provides specialists in many diverse fields available for use by local councils in solving special problems.  The National Council also serves as a support service for the local councils.  On-line registration and membership support, innovative program and literature development, policy development, advancement support, personnel systems, liability insurance base, and maintaining consistency of programs throughout he nation are all services of the National Council.

Regions - The Regional management centers are liaisons between the National Council and Local Councils.  The region provides direct support to the councils, with personnel on call in the fields of endowment, fund raising, computers, program, and administration.  Regional offices provide direct support services to Area Directors.  The Flint River Council is a part of the Southern Region, consisting of the following 13 states:  Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

Areas - The nation's 26 Area Directors maintain field offices within their respective geographic areas.  The each work directly with 10-15 local councils.  The Area Director maintains direct contact with the Scout Executive and becomes acquainted with community problems and key council volunteers.  The Flint River Council is part of the Southern Region Area 6 which servers the southern portion of the Atlanta Georgia Metropolitan area.

Council - The most visible level of the Boy Scouts of America is the local council.  There are 340 incorporated and chartered local councils across the United States, each responsible for fostering a meaningful Scouting program within its territory. The Flint River Council was chartered by the National Council in 1943, serving youth in WEST CENTRAL GEORGIA.  We are bordered by three other councils and they are Atlanta Area, Central Georgia and Chattahoochee Councils.

Districts - The district is the service area of the council, for the purpose of unit, membership, finance, and program services.  The Flint River Council has four districts within its council:  Coweta, Sepohayetv (Fayette), Tussahaw (Butts and Henry), Ronotohachi (Lamar, Pike, Upson, and Spalding).
