INTRODUCTION

This book is composed of a series of topical studies on the Qu’ran. Its purpose is to take the reader into the Qu’ran to see for himself what it says on these different subjects. For that reason, it is necessary for anyone wishing to work through this study course to have his own copy of the Qu’ran. This study was prepared using the Qu’ran Karim, the Islamic Foundation of Bangladesh’s Bengali translation of the Qu’ran. If you use another translation there may be instances where verses do not agree with those given since different translators sometimes use slightly different numbering systems. Thus, should a verse not seem to relate to the topic of study, read the immediate context from a few verses before the verse and a few after the verse to see if it is simply a difference in numbering. It may be that the actual verse intended is simply numbered slightly different in your translation.

In actually completing the studies, the procedure is as follows. In each topic examined, a topic heading is given. Under that heading, Qu’ranic verses are listed dealing with that topic. For brevity, the Sura names are not given, simply the Sura number followed by the verse number. Thus, the reference 5:23; 24 refers to the twenty third and the twenty fourth verses of the fifth Sura. Similarly, 48:3-6 refers to verses three through six in the forty-eight Sura. After the Qu’ranic reference is given, a space is provided for you to summarize in your own words what the passage says on the topic in question.

For example look at the first section of study one on page “5”. In section “1.a.” the passage referred to is 6:115. It is there fore the 115th verse of Sura six.   The topic under study (the heading of section 1) “The Quran’s Testimony that Allah’s Word Is Unchangeable.” Thus, a summary of what the verse says in relationship to that topic might read as follows: “Allah’s Word is perfect in truth and justice and no one can change His word.” In many cases you will simply be expected to summarize in your own words the main message of the verse in question. However, sometimes there will be additional questions asked relating to the verse. Thus, in that same section, “1.a” of study one, there are three additional questions that relate to passage 6:115. In most cases, the answer to these questions will be clearly stated in the verse understudy. Thus, the answer to question one is: “It is complete in truth and justice.” The answer to question two is; “No one” and the answer to question three would be something like: “Yes, because Allah knows all things.” In addition to the Qu’ranic references, there are also usually references given to the Bible; where such references occur, the procedure is the same as for the Qu’ranic reference. Simply look up the passage and summarize what it says in your own words. If additional questions relating to the passage are given, you should answer them from the information found in the passage under question.

Finally, in some questions you will be asked to state your own ideas or conclusions after examining the different passages or to give your own experience relating to a certain issue. In those cases you will be expected to simply record your own thoughts and experiences. For such questions there is no right or wrong answer.
